Disaster declaration California, burned nearly a million acres..
Fires in California have now burned nearly a million acres.
That's about 1560 square miles.
Now, President Donald Trump has approved a disaster declaration for the state.
That allows for grants that can help with temporary housing and repairs of homes, loans to help deal with loss of uninsured property, and programs meant to help both individuals and business owners recuperate.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency earlier in the week.
“Thank you to the President for your partnership and granting this urgent Major Disaster Declaration. California is battling two of the largest fires in our history and has seen nearly 600 new fires in the last week caused by dry lightning strikes. These are unprecedented times and conditions, but California is strong – we will get through this,” said Governor Newsom.
Record-breaking heat, extreme wind, and a slight humidity that combined with the heat from the fire to create thunderstorms have all made for a deadly combination, springing up new fires left and right.
Right now, there are more than 13,700 firefighters battling wildfires in California.
At least five people have died in recent fires in California: a PG&E worker in Vacaville; 3 civilians in Northern California; and a privately contracted helicopter pilot battling the Hills Fire in Coalinga.
As of Saturday evening, the Hills Fire was about 80% contained.
At least 100,000 people have been asked to evacuate.
Recently, the Moccasin Fire has pushed Mariposa County residents from their homes.
Hundreds of fire engines from other states have been called in to battle the hundreds of wildfires currently raging in California.
The National guard is providing helicopter support and a dozen different crews of 20.
The federal military is also helping out, sending in C-130 aircrafts.
Congressman Kevin McCarthy, who has represented California's 23rd district since 2013, and was a Representative for the state's 23rd district for 6 years before that, sent a statement after the emergency declaration was made:
“As wildfires continue to burn throughout California, this Major Disaster Declaration request – made by Governor Newsom and swiftly approved by President Trump – will provide critical federal funds to help us contain these fires. I am grateful to the Trump Administration, along with the ten states that have sent additional on-the-ground help, for recognizing the severity of the situation and collaborating with us to fight these wildfires. Judy and I send our heartfelt thanks to all the firefighters, first responders, and emergency service workers fighting to minimize damage and, more importantly, save lives. I will continue working with state, local, and federal partners to ensure that our communities have the necessary resources they need to remain safe during this time.”
