China stadiums fans, Chinese Super League pushes for fans at match on Saturday.

The Chinese Super League is planning to admit up to 1,900 fans to the Shanghai SIPG v Beijing Guoan fixture this Saturday.

It would be the first time fans have been able to attend a match in the top-tier Chinese football league since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

The plan is still being finalised between the league and government authorities. It is hoped that 500 fans of each team will be allowed into the stadium in Suzhou, alongside a contingent of medical personnel who helped fight the pandemic and workers who helped fight recent floods in China. Fans will have to produce certification showing they have tested negative for Covid-19 within the last week and abide by social distancing rules within the stadium.

The CSL 2020 season kicked off on July 25 and is being played in secure ‘bubbles’ in two cities, Suzhou and Dalian.

Agence France Presse reported that some players and team staff are struggling with the tight lockdown surrounding the bubbles. In each city, players and staff are confined to one sealed-off hotel, and are not permitted to leave until the end of September, even to meet their families. The league has provided facilities and entertainment to keep the teams occupied during their lockdown, including video games, a library, and karaoke.

In other Chinese football news, Beijing’s famous Workers’ Stadium has been torn down as the country renovates its football infrastructure ahead of the 2023 Asian Cup. China is hosting the Asian Cup, and hopes to host a World Cup in future.

The 65,000-capacity Workers Stadium was built in 1959 and was home to Beijing Guoan. It also hosted national team matches, as well as other events including music concerts. A replacement stadium will be built on the same site by December 2022.
